Apple Card Issues $10BLN in 1st Month, Adds Cash Back for Walgreens, Duane Reade, and Others
Apple Card reported “the best card launch ever” when it issued over $10 billion in credit card lines for August 2019, its first month of operations. This puts Apple Card on track to become a top 10 card issuer in the USA within 12 months.

Less noticed is Apple Card’s steady increase in the number of card-linked offer cash back partners. The card launched with just Uber and Uber Eats as cash back partners. Since the August launch, “everyday spend” merchants including Walgreens, Duane Reade and T-mobile have been added at a rapid clip. The insight here is that card-linked cash back offers have emerged as the “must have” digital engagement driver for credit cards.
Yahoo Japan in Talks Over Combining with Chat App Line
SoftBank’s Yahoo Japan confirmed it is in talks to merge with Line. This $27 billion union will bring together two of Japan’s largest QR code payment apps. Line operates one of Japan’s most popular messaging app, Line Taxi, Line Pay and among many other services. Yahoo Japan is a household name in Japan with their online advertising business, finance services and more.

The introduction of the Japanese government’s Cashless Japan initiative has led to a significant increase in mobile payments adoption. SoftBank and Yahoo Japan’s smart phone payment services platform, PayPay, has been able to gain 19 million users through aggressive marketing to aid the cashless effort. This merger will enable them to increase their users through the 82 million Japanese users of the Line app.
